Everything You need to know about servicing your Movado Watch

Posted by Alan A on

Movado is a well-known brand that makes a number of good watches, including mechanical watches. Every few years, your watch will need regular maintenance to ensure it’s running properly. Read on to find out what you can do by yourself, and what should only be attempted by a professional service provider.

Cleaning

It’s important to clean your Movado watch regularly. No matter how clean you think you are, the inside of your watch can get very dirty! When cleaning, don’t use liquid. Instead, follow the official instructions provided by Movado to make sure the cleaning is done correctly. If unsure, contact a professional in your area.

Watch Overhaul

Like a car or any other piece of sophisticated machinery, a watch needs to go in for a checkup once in a while. If you wear your watch regularly, you should give it a complete overhaul every three to five years. The can be done by a watch servicing professional, who will carefully go over the watch and make sure there are no small problems that could develop into bigger, costlier ones down the road.

Use Regularly

If your Movado watch is mechanical, and you don’t usually wear it, make sure to wind and run it at least once every month. This is because there are oils inside the watch that can dry out if the watch isn’t used. Running the watch helps keep it lubricated.

Water Resistance

If your Movado watch is water resistant and you regularly expose it to water, you should have it serviced more often—every two years. These watches have an O-ring, which is a rubber gasket, as well as screw-down threads. It’s important to check these and make sure they haven’t been compromised in any way. Otherwise, water could make its way inside the watch, causing costly damage.

It’s also important to check the rating of you watch’s water resistance. A rating of 30 meters might sound impressive, but that’s actually the bare minimum water resistance rating for a watch. It might survive an accidental splash, but if you regularly expose your watch to water, it should have a water resistance rating of 50 meters or more.

Foggy Lens

Water on the outside of your watch can cool the air inside, causing some condensation. This can be seen a as a foggy watch lens. While this is normal, the fog should clear up after a couple minutes. If the lens remains unclear after a few minutes, this could mean there’s trouble with the water sealing, so you should take your watch to a professional service provider as quickly as you can.

Shock Resistance

If your Movado watch is mechanical, you should avoid exposing it to unnecessary shocks, for example when playing golf or tennis. While the watch will have some shock dampening, it’s good to avoid exposing it to shocks if possible, as these can disrupt the delicate mechanisms inside the watch. If your watch has a quartz movement, it should be more durable in this area.

Crystal

If there are acrylic crystals on your Movado watch and they become scratched, it’s easy to polish them. A product called Polywatch is made for this purpose, although other products such as headlamp lens cleaner, or Brasso, a metal polishing product, can also work.

Case

Movado watch cases can also be polished. Kits are available that include abrasive fabric to restore the watch face’s finish.

Watch Bands

Watch bands should be cleaned periodically. If your watch band is metal, you should detach it from the watch before cleaning. Wash it with a soft brush and warm, soapy water. If you can’t remove the strap, and your watch’s water resistance rating is less than 50 meters, it should be cleaned by a professional.

Leather bands should be kept away from water. Wipe the inside and outside of the band each day. If the strap becomes wet, let it dry before wearing it again. When cleaning it, check the buckle to make sure it’s working properly and hasn’t become loose.

Rubber bands can absorb sweat, oil and salt water, so they need to be cleaned regularly. To clean a rubber band, use an old, soft toothbrush and some water with mild dish detergent. Clean both sides of the strap, then let it dry. If salt water gets on your band, rinse it with fresh water as soon as possible.

Conclusion

Movado is a well-known watch making company. As you can see, while the inside of the watch is best serviced by a professional, there are many things you can do to keep your Movado watch well-serviced and problem-free.
